At the time of he received his draft notice he was devastated as the news adversely affected him, and worst of all his beloved mother (i.e. Gladys Love {Smith} Presley), as he (a) had never traveled out of the United States other than to go to Canada briefly (b) was at the height of his fame/popularity and (c) was concerned that this would ruin his career.

Elvis' mother died on August 14, 1958 while Elvis was in the US Army and he was inconsolable and her death left scars on Elvis that would (sadly) never heal.

During his stint in the US Army, from 1958 through 1960, Elvis got into great shape - met new friends - and was thankful to have served his country who he loved.
