First, since he only knew the Middle Ages (he lived from 1225-1274), he could not really compare them to other ages; and since he was an educated man and a scholar, he had a much better life than peasants or serfs did. Aquinas lived in a world that was dominated by the Catholic Church-- in fact, few people had an education, except for some of the nobles, and many members of the Catholic clergy (like priests, bishops, and monks). For his time, he was respected: he was not only a scholar but the author of a number of important religious treatises. He also taught Catholic theology, and was certain that Catholicism the one true religion. But he believed in using reason and logic in his teaching, rather than just expecting students to just memorize whatever a professor told them to believe. And he especially admired the Greek philosopher Aristotle, whose work he both studied and taught.

Very few people of the Middle Ages believed in vampires, and when they did, it was because of the continuation in local folklore of ancient beliefs. The widespread interest in vampires appeared in Europe only long after the Middle Ages ended.
