  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (July 4, 1776 - when the Declaration of Independence was signed and the US arguably came into existence as a separate nation - to December 1776)
  • Baltimore, Maryland (December 20, 1776 to March 3, 1777)
  • Lancaster, Pennsylvania (for one day - September 27, 1777 - while the congress was on the run from British forces)
  • York, Pennsylvania (September 30, 1777 to June 1778)
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (mid-1778 to mid-1783)
  • Princeton, New Jersey (for about 4 months during the summer and early fall of 1783 - hiding out from Continental soldiers who were demanding their back-pay)
  • Annapolis, Maryland (November 26, 1783 through August 1784)
  • Trenton, New Jersey (November 1, 1784 through December 1784)
  • New York City (January 1785 through December 1790)
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (between 1790 and 1800 while Washington, D.C., was being built)
==========

Prior to actually establishing the nation formally as the "United States", US leaders met in Philadelphia, then Princeton, New Jersey, then Annapolia, Maryland, and then Trenton, New Jersey.

After the United States was established, a formal capital was set forth in New York, New York until July 1790.

After that time, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the temporary capital for about 10 years.

And then, it was moved to Washington D.C. as part of the compromise to gain approval for the Constitution in 1789.
