Rings can be made from any metal depending upon your personal choice. Sliver, gold, platinum, white gold, steel and brass etc.
Chain Mail is one of the few materials only available through the creative menu. Some mods allow it in survival mode however.

Because the chain mail is metal, it conducts the heat away from the skin leaving you feeling cold so the vests were there to keep them warm. Also, if you were to take a hard hit onto chain mail on bare skin, the rings would cut into the skin. Sure, not as bad as if the soldier hadn't had the mail, but still an injury. So, padding was needed.
Some cuirasses were made of several layers of leather. The chain mail armor, the "lorica hamatata" was made of iron rings and the segmented armor, the "lorica segmentata" was also made of iron. Copper was unlikely to be used for combat as it was too soft. Iron was the preferred metal.

well pretty much the 1st kind of armor was leather (hardened animal skin or in other words "hide") then chain mail (chain mails are the kind of armors that are made of rings bound together) then metals like the armor people would usually think would be what knights armor is made out of. -Alex M.-
