In the 1960's there really wasn't any gangs like today. For the most part they did exist in places like East LA or Compton, but as a whole they didn't exist. There has always been illegal people who use society to make money for themselves. In the 1920's the mafia became very powerful in the United States making illegal liquor, owning the trucking and building unions, handling the ports and controlling them, even owning garage companies. Of course, one of the largest gangs of the 1960's was the Hells Angles motorcycle club. They ran drugs and did other illegal activities, but the gangs like what we see today with young teens involved weren't that active. They were just starting . I think young men and women join gangs because they don't feel a connection to a church, family, or community so the gang becomes the important connection in their life. All of us need to feel connected to something or someone who is greater than we are.

There were over 100 street gangs in the 1960’s, in Southern California alone, during the 1960’s, so you’d have to be more specific to what state or city you are referring to.

Crip started in 1969. Blood started in the early 1970’s. Sureno/Norteno started in the mid 1950’s. And the gangs that started these labels, started 10 years prior.
