Through the so-called 'Silk Road', the merchants of the past found a way to export many goods from eastern countries that were very rare or even unheard of in Europe, and, in turn, they could expand their wealth by exporting their easily found and produced western goods to the people of the east. Among the most important items they imported from China was the all important silk, deliciously decorated porcelain, bronze ornaments, weapons and other products of this metal, umbrellas, varnishes, medicines and perfumery, also Chinese paper, which was highly appreciated in Europe at the time, rice, tea and animal skins.
