Native Americans lived in the area long before Michigan was invented and state boundaries meant absolutely nothing to them. The tribes of that area were the Ojibwe or Chippewa, the Menominee, Potawatomi, Miami, Sauk (Sac), Fox (Mesquakie) and Kickapoo. All had their own language, and there were often different words in each language, so there was never a single term for "house".

For example, Ojibwe words for house include waaginogaan, wiigiwaam, miigiwaamens.

In Menominee some of the words for a house are apa:kiwika:n, matae:peh, ne:k, we:kewam, owe:kew.

In Potawatomi the word for house is wigwam.

In the Miami-Illinois language a native dwelling is called wiikiiamii.

There are many types of Native American homes. Tipi (short for thipi, a Lakota word for dwelling). Tipis are made out of long sticks and hide. Tipis were and still are made by Plains tribes. Wigwam (also called wickiup) is not the correct term for a Tipi since wigwams are dome shaped native homes made out of reeds and sticks. They are made by Southwest tribes. People often confuse the two. Adobe is a home made out of clay or mud. Common among South and Southwest tribes. Particularly desert tribes. Thatched huts made out of clay, mud, reed and sticks were common among Southeastern and West Coast tribes. Long houses are long single room dwellings that housed many tribal members together. Usually made of reeds and sticks. Long houses were built by Northeastern tribes.

They can be called teepees (also tipi or tepee) or longhouses. It depends on which tribe you're talking about.
