You have to be a little more specific. If in context with The United States of America, the biggest fear was the "Second Red Scare" which occured after WWII. People were terrified of communism and being bombed by the Soviet Union. Something huge was being accused of being a communist. Once accused, you basically had to no friends, maybe even family and couldn't get a job. One of the major accusers was "Senator Joseph McCarthy".
