The Mexican-American War (1846-1848) was the result of disputed land claims between the United States and Mexico. Mexico claimed most of what is now the southwest US, based on the claims by the Spanish from whom they achieved independence in 1810. The United States, anxious to claim California and the rest of the West, annexed Texas and sent troops to enforce the disputed border. When US troops were engaged by Mexican forces, war was declared.
