The increasing wealth of the Roman Empire as it grew didn't cause very much problems by itself. The main problem happened when the emperors started to get greedy and use the taxes they collected on themselves instead of the empire. As citizens learned of this they slowly stopped paying the taxes and the richer citizens were able to afford their own army to rebel.
