Japan's economy was a bit depressed after World War I. Just like everyone else's. But remember that Japan sided with the Allies against Germany in that conflict - unlike their choice in the second global conflict. Japan had been kicking butt in the western Pacific since before the turn of the century. They'd stepped on China, taken over in Korea and beat down the Russians in the area. After the end of WWI, they consolidated and regrouped and continued their expansionist activities. There was some attempt to bring in a democracy in the 20's, but the military had a great deal of power, and they were able to muscle aside the movement and maintain their authority. They continued to be tough on their neighbors (they killed several million over the 50 years or so that they held sway in the region) right up to the latter part of WWII when their military was spread thin and taking heavy hits. Things came to a screaching halt for them when the atomic bombs fell and they surrendered unconditionally.
In short, the US Military occupied the nation (I think it was for 7 years). The primary reason for occupying the mainland island of Japan and capitol city of Tokyo was to restore relations with the Japanese, start up a democratic style of government with an Emperor as a monarch head. They also wanted to help restore the country. They brought in many professionals from the US to help them establish new trades and businesses such as the technological industries and automotive industries. They also had to resolve the problems for the Japanese who needed Natural Resources. They worked out ways for them to get the necessary recources from the US and other countries. We sent them scrap metal and ores. The oil embargo was lifted. One problem developed that the military did not handled with all the silly buearaucratic rules in the high up leadership and the Presidental Cabinet. The a lot of military men fell in love with Japanese women and wanted to marry them and take them back to the US. Some managed to do it but many did not get the permission to do it. A team of scientist was sent over to help Japan deal with the effects of the radiation. Medical specialists were sent too. They helped to improve the medical care of the Japanese and trained them in higher medical standards.
Japan didn't have good stuff, after that war, but the US helped them and got really smart with it. Then we taught ourselves good and made good technology, art, and everything else in between!
