The South had three disadvantages that would haunt them throughout the war.

1) They had a smaller population and therefore fewer able bodied men to fill the ranks of the army or replenish it due to casualties.

2) They had less industry, especially in heavy manufacturing so they could not compete with the North in production of war materiel'.

3) Their navy was a scratch built force and did not even exist until after the war began. They were able to build up a semblance of a navy, which would include ironclads, but could never build enough war ships to lift the Northern blockade of their ports.

What were some disadvantages the South had in the beginning of the US Civil War?

The question is vague as it asks about the "following" and provides no items to discuss. However, be that as it may, we can explore what were disadvantages of the South when & during the Civil War. The South's disadvantages were: A. Smaller pool of men to fuel the army, as the North had a significantly larger population; B. No formal army existed in the South at the beginning of the war. The North's army was only 16,000 men but it was more than the South's; C. The South had no manufacturing base to supply arms & ammunition and other products the Union army needed. The South had to play catch -up in creating factories; and D. The South had no navy to protect its ports, it had to create one quickly but the North already had large shipyards to build warships.

What is the difference in a civil war and a war of aggression?

A civil war is when 2 factions fight to control the same government. The south wanted their own government so the American 'Civil War' was not a civil war. It was and is the south's view that the north invaded the south, starting a war of aggression.
