It had a rather difficult lay-out with its hundreds of rooms. There is a legend about a monster - half man, half bull, eating young human beings every year sent from Athens, called the Minotaur, probably the son of Minos, the King of Crete - who lived in a labyrinth. Now historians say that the 'labyrinth ' could be the Palace of Knossos itself.
