In the 1856 campaign for the US presidency, Democrats used many arguments to persuade voters not to vote for the Republicans. One strong argument was that the Republicans were dominated by evangelical Christians. The Democrats denounced the mixture of politics and religion. This in fact was true. The Republican campaign erased any lines between religion and politics. Churches became party gathering places and Protestant ministers were prominent during the campaign.
Democrats also believed that the new party, the Republicans were a divisive force that needed to be defeated at the polls.
Henry Clay ran for the National Republicans against Andrew Jackson. The party was formed against Jackson Democrats and soon grew into the Whigs.
They're not. Right now, the focus is on the Republican party because the Democrats have the incumbent, President Obama. The Republicans are deciding who will run against Obama.
There have been four presidential assassins. Booth, the man who killed Lincoln was still fighting the Civil War against the North. He was surely not a Republican and if he voted, he would have voted against Lincoln. The Democrats were split over slavery but those who supported slavery were mostly Democrats, so he may have considered himself a democrat. The three other assassins were clearly not democrats.
Donald Trump is a Republican candidate. Democrats generally support members of the Democratic party.
During the presidential election of 1856, Buchanan's Republican challenger, John C. Frémont, argued against slavery. The Republicans opposed the extension of slavery into the territories. In fact, their slogan was "Free speech, free press, free soil, free men, Frémont and victory!" The Republicans thus crusaded against the Slave Power, warning it was destroying republican values. Democrats counter-crusaded by warning that a Republican victory would bring civil war.
282 states switched parties (to Democrats) in the 1932 presidential election with only 374 remaining loyal to the Republican candidate.

He ran against Taft in 1912.
Democrat. He was their presidential candidate in the 2004 election against George Bush.
The Republican candidate cannot start his presidential campaign until a Republican candidate is selected. The President probably won't start his campaign until he knows exactly who he will be running against.
