Many people in the U.S. were Isolationists. They did not believe that what was happening in Europe was the business of anyone in the U.S. In the Pacific, the U.S. officials believed what the Japanese officials were saying, that Japan was not ACTUALLY planning to attack. U.S. officials were naive in the Pacific and staying out of Europe because they didn't believe that it was any of their business.
