Both of his older brothers and his mother died as a result of the Revolutionary War by the time he was fourteen and he himself was captured by the enemy and almost died of smallpox. He was on his own to support himself or depend on the charity of his aunts and uncles. Both of his parents were born in Ireland so he had very limited family connections to help him.
