Some married same-sex couples benefit from the federal government not recognizing their relationship with respect to federal income tax. Also, some might find it easier to qualify for federal tuition assistance, food stamps, or Social Security Disability, etc., when the income and assets of a same-sex spouse (particularly an estranged one) are not counted. The disadvantages, however, greatly outweigh whatever advantage may exist.
