With one exception, each front in World War I was fought in nearly identical fashion. The Eastern, the Western, the Italian, and the Balkan fronts were all fought in a trench-warfare style, with few or no major advances possible by either side except on rare occasions. The Middle-Eastern front is the exception: while incorporating some trench-warfare methods, this front featured extensive use of cavalry over large (mostly desert) portions of terrain.
