In seriousness Italy was more or less overwhelmed by the war it signed up to fight with Germany. Italy's army was designed to fight tiny African states and control overseas colonies. Not fight modern wars against major European powers like Britain and France.
Ultimately Italy did little more than sap Axis resources and manpower from more important fronts during the war.
