2. Prior to Guadalcanal, US actions were defensive in nature.
3. Guadalcanal was, in actuality, America's first major counter-attack of the war.
4. Guadalcanal was chosen because it was the southern most advance of the enemy, and it had an airfield on it...plus one more being built. Because of the long distance nature of the Pacific War (PTO-Pacific Theater of Operations), airpower would be the main player...including sea battles, via the aircraft carrier. Land based airplanes need airfields; the only land in the Pacific are islands; Guadalcanal was one of them.
