As Joseph had earlier interpreted the dreams in prison, of the two pharaohs cup bearer and his baker. And he even interpreted the dream of Pharaoh, that there would be seven years of plenty and then seven years of famine. And it so happened, Pharaoh knew then that god was using Joseph.

Elder John Taylor made this list of Joseph Smith's accomplishments shortly following his death in 1844. Doctrine and Covenants 135:3:

"Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years,

  • he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and
  • has been the means of publishing it on two continents;
  • has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth;
  • has brought forth the revelations and commandments which compose this book of Doctrine and Covenants,
  • and many other wise documents and instructions for the benefit of the children of men;
  • gathered many thousands of the Latter-day Saints,
  • founded a great city, and
  • left a fame and name that cannot be slain.

He lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people; and like most of the Lord's anointed in ancient times, has sealed his mission and his works with his own blood; and so has his brother Hyrum. In life they were not divided, and in death they were not separated!"

1) It was thanks to him that the Israelites (Jacob and family) survived the famine (Genesis ch.46 and ch.50).

2) He was the only person from the time of Jacob until Moses who experienced prophecy in any form. (Joseph had prophetic dreams. Genesis ch.37.)

3) Joseph was viceroy in Egypt (Genesis ch.41); and it was thanks to him that the nation of Egypt survived the famine.

4) During the long sojourn of the Israelites in Egypt, Joseph took steps to preclude them from assimilating (Genesis 46:31-34).

5) Jacob considered him the most worthy of his sons (Genesis 37:3 and 49:26); and he was deemed important enough to comprise two of the twelve Israelite tribes (Genesis 48:3-5).

6) He was the ancestor of Joshua (1 Chronicles ch.7).

7) Joseph was steadfast in withstanding temptation (Genesis ch.39).
