Even though (previously) they knew they could not win the island-hopping war from Guadalcanal up to Iwo Jima, the Japanese soldiers kept killing allied troops, at the expense of a huge number of casualties onboth sides.
Given the refusal of the Japanese to surrender, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. The Japanese war leaders still refused to surrender! This time, though, more practical Japanese rose up and, putting down their Army leaders, agreed to surrender.
