Historically, slavery began in Biblical times with Jews being slaves to the Egyptians in ancient Egypt. They were slaves to the Pharoahs. Slavery started because someone thought they had the right and power to enslave another human being, usually for economic gain. For example, slaves built the Pyramids.
Colonial United States just continued centuries of someone in power believing they could own another person. Britan practiced slavery and indenturehood-- and thus, when colonists came to America, they continued what they knew, except that people discovered tons of free labor in Africa. The first white man who physically took an African woman or forced African men onto ships continued centuries of practices of overwhelming a country and taking by force. Britan saw a huge need for their elite citizens who moved to America to have free labor. Thus, slavery was inevitable.
Ironically, American settlers did NOT try to enslave American Indians, at least not en mass. Perhaps one reason was that Native Americans fought back with scalpings etc. Perhaps Europeans thought of Indians as "savages" and less able to be taught that the black slaves. Or, perhaps the Europeans suspected that if they took Indians as slaves, they would anger and incite ALL the Indian tribes... at a time when white men wanted Indian lands.
It is not known exactly why Abraham Lincoln so opposed slavery. His own humble beginnings may have been a contributing factor, and while he was not openly religious, Lincoln had very strong convictions in God.

Slavery has been practiced since the beginnings of mankind. Anywhere there is a group in power, there is risk for slavery to occur.
Hundreds of different writings stirred up anti-slavery sentiment, from 1688 when a Quaker petition against slavery circulated in Pennsylvania, to 1865 when the 13th Amendment passed, ending slavery. About 215 of them are reprinted in the recent AMERICAN ANTISLAVERY WRITINGS: COLONIAL BEGINNINGS TO EMANCIPATION, edited by James Basker and published by Library of America.
There is no way to determine the exact beginnings of slavery. Slavery pre-dates written records. One of the earliest known records of slavery is The Code of Hammurabi (ca. 1760 BC) which stated that anyone who helped a slave escape would be put to death. Pertaining specifically to your question about Islamic societies, slavery was known in almost every ancient civilization including the Islamic Caliphate. We will never know who the FIRST society to use slavery was.
