Sherman was one of the first proponents of Total War in the western world. [Genghis Khan and Tamburlaine mastered it on the Asian steppes.] He believed that attacking the source of supplies (food, transportation, communications) was the best way force the army in the field into capitulation. He saw it as an attack on the enemy supply base, but for the entire army, not just for corps on the battlefield. By extension, his view of war led to the near-extermination of Native Americans, unrestricted submarine warfare, and the aerial bombardment of civilian populations in subsequent wars.
