On his deathbed, Alexander was prompted to give the name of his successor - this he did not do or was unable to do. Of course there are speculations on words that he may have muttered - such as kratistos meaning 'the strongest' but it also could have been the name of one of his comrades Krateros - but this will probably never be proven. As Alexander had no legitimate heir, a regent was appointed to look after his empire, which was thus divided into different lands between several of his comrades. Therefore, the empire was no more and separate smaller empires and kingdoms were formed. For further information, look at the Seleucids, the Ptolomies and the Antigonids.

The most noted short term effect of Alexander the Greats reign was the unity of his empire. Before his death the empire spread from Greece to Egypt, but quickly broke apart after he died.
1765
Alexander didn't rise to power - he inherited the power from his murdered father Philip II of Macedonia. After Philip's death, Alexander took over his father's expedition to conquer the Persian Empire. This he achieved over the next ten years. After Alexander's early death, his generals divided the Empire amongst themselves, forming their own kingdoms in Greece, Egypt, Syria-Mesopotamia and Asia Minor.
Alexander's generals split his empire between them. These became known as the Hellenistic kingdoms, which remained dominant until progressively absorbed into the Roman empire.
After he died all of his generals fought over who was going to take over which lands. The generals actually killed each other to see who would rule. This happened because Alexander left no heir.
