The federalist were more from the north. They were led by Alexander Hamilton, believed wealthy and well educated should lead the nation, favored a strong central government, emphasized manufacturing, shipping, and trade, they favored a loose interpretation of the Constitution. They were also pro-British, favored a nation bank, and a protective tariff. The Democratic-Republicans were the opposite. Led by Thomas Jefferson, believed people should have political power, favored strong state government, and emphasized agriculture <----!!! Strict Interpretation of Constitution, Pro- French, opposed national bank and protective tariff. Tariff= tax on foreign goods

:)

(This information is incorrect for the question. Federalism basically began to end at the start of the War of 1812, and disappeared in 1815, during the Era of Good Feeling. This information could be counted as correct for the Revolutionary War or some other war taking place in the late 1700's or the early 1800's, but the American Civila War did not start until 1861.)

The American civil war started between seven secessionist states and twenty three Union states in 1861. Although the main reason for the war was the issue of slavery, there were other issues like states rights, sectionalism, territorial crisis and national elections.

One major difference was that the north was more federalized, where the states had power which was superseded by the national government while the south wished for a more state empowered government, like the nations of Europe within the EU.

Also, the north and south had different standards on the gauge of the railroads tracks, meaning that train from the north could not transfer onto the tracks of a train from the south, which caused problem after the civil war.

And obviously, the north outlawed slavery whereas the south still allowed it.

The north also had more industrial advances where the south didn't. The south used farming tool and sneak attacks to fight, the south used guns and bombs. The north also out number the South.

Leading up to and during the Civil War, the North tended to be more urban while the South was more rural. The North was also more industrial than the agricultural South, which gave the North a steep advantage.
