The Role of Aboriginal Men

The role of aboriginal men is fairly different from the role of aboriginal women. the men of the tribe are on charge of hunting for the protein based meat while the women are in charge of gathering insect, fruit, veges and so on.

At the age of six the male aborigines would go off with their fathers to learn how to hunt but the girls stayed with the women to learn how to gather.

The women play the leading role in child education and food gathering but both sexes share the roles of healers, law makers, performers, painters and custodians of traditional ways.

Traditionally the women are the food gatherers; they collect seeds, vegetables, fruit, small insects and larvae with which they can prepare meals for their family. While the men are responsible for hunting animals like Kangaroo, wallabies, snakes, lizards and birds, they spear them and take them back to their wives so they can be cooked.

Women were responsible for taking care of her children until they reached 6 years old. Once the boys turned 6 they joined their fathers to help them hunt animals but the girls remained with the mothers so they can be taught about the skills they will need in adult life. Ceremonies play an important role in Aboriginal society and men and women have both combined ceremonies and separate ceremonies. Women were never thought of to be substandard in Aboriginal society until Europeans arrived after this; any rights which women had were secretly received through their husbands.
