There were different types of gladiators that did different challenges:
Retiarii fought other gladiators with a trident, or pitchfork, and net.
Venators fought animals with clubs or spears.
Andabatae fought blindfolded with a shield and sword.
Cesti fought other cesti with their fists or with special boxing gloves.
Dimachaeri fought with two swords, one in each hand.
Equites rodes horses, but other than that apparently had no specific armor or weapons.
Velites fought with a grappling spear.
Myrmilli or secutors wore lots of armor and used a sword and shield.
Paegniarii didn't use real weapons, but were merely for fun. They of course lived the longest; one apparently lived to be over 99.
Provocators were dressed and armed like Roman legionaires.
And last but not least, Scissores fought with scissors. I'm serious, they actually fought with a pair of giant scissors that had no hinge.

There were thraexes, retiarius or net men, provocator and hoplomachuses.
When the gladiators wern't fighting they would practice at the ampitheatre or be at their quarters. Gladiators wenrnt often completely killed as they were hard to replace and provided a great source of entertainment. When the crowd wanted a gladiator to be completely killed the kind would have to rule the decision.
The gladiators were mostly slaves. Some were criminals convicted to the arena. There were also a few volunteers. The gladiators did not fight for Rome. They were not a military force. They fought in the gladiatorial combats, which were public shows in the amphitheatres (arenas). The Romans loved the gladiatorial games.
The gladiators performed because the Romans adored the gladiatorial games. Most gladiators were slaves who lived and trained at the gladiatorial schools. They had to perform.

Only one of 16 different types of gladiators wore armour. This was the provocator (challenger) who wore a breastplate and whose armament was similar to that of a Roman soldiers. All other types of gladiators fought bare chested. This was a symbol of defiance against death.
