General US Grant kept troops there until May 21, 1864 waiting for reinforcements as replacements for his losses which numbered over 30,000 casualties. The Confederates had heavy casualties as well. These numbered close to 18,000. The effects and consequences of the battles in and around Spotsylvania, might have given Grant pause regarding sending his men to almost certain death or wounds when attacking fortified Confederate positions.
