1995 Kobe earthquake is also known as the Great Hanshin Earthquake. This devastating earthquake occurred on January 17, 1995 in the Southern part of Hyogo Prefecture. It lasted for 20 seconds and had a magnitude of Mw6.8 on Moment Magnitude Scale.

This earth quake had a terrible short term as well as long term affects. As common with such tragedies, the short term effects also convert to long term effects gradually. Same was the case with Kobe earthquake. Around 200,000 buildings collapsed, around 1 km of the express way collapsed and 120 quays were also destroyed. Apart from that in the short term the electricity supply was disrupted. The people were left outside as they were afraid to return home. There were 716 after shocks of this earthquake.

In the long term damage, there were 6434 people recorded to be dead. It also caused ten trillion yen of damage in Japan. Railways and roads were damaged. Kobe never regained its former position of world's busiest sea port. The Japanese Stock Market faced a decline.

Short term effects:

  • 1/5 of Kobe was homeless (300,000 people)
  • fires started from gas pipes. The major ones (about a dozen) were uncontrolable for 2-3 days!
  • no gas, electricity, water
  • broken water, gas, and sewage pipes leaked everywhere
