World War I was mainly trench warfare. They had trenches on one side where the Allies were and trenches on the other side with the Germans. In between was no mans land which was pretty desolate and empty. There was rolled barbed wire and holes from shells that had been fired but most vegetation was gone pretty quickly. The way the war was fought was that one or both sides would rise out of the trenches and advance on the other. Whichever side was able to advance that is who won that piece of ground. There was poisonous gas that was used in WWI which was later banned. The airplanes were new on the scene. That is where you get the first dogfights.
Since the Vietnam War took place over 40 years later the weaponry was much more sophisticated. The battles took place in dense jungles. The planes and helicopters were used much more in battles. Rockets, Napalm, Tanks and other weaponry made it a completely different war. Jungle fighting and trench warfare have almost no similarities.
