I believe it was Tamagotchi. I was around nine years old (so like 13 years ago) when Tamagotchi first came out. It got very popular after that when the Digimon handhelds and Gigapets came out.
Virtual pets when compared to real pets only have their physical resemblance in common. Virtual pets do not require physical nutrition, walking or petting. They do not either provide the same level of pleasure.
