President Eisenhower insisted that the first astronauts be pilots (preferably military) with experience as test pilots. All astronauts were to have college degrees; however John Glenn did not have a degree having dropped out of college during WWII to join the USAAF. Astronauts could not be over 5'11' or weigh more than 180 pounds to to the space limitations in the capsule, Seven astronauts were chosen to be participants in the Mercury program. One, Donald K. 'Deke' Slayton was grounded for medical problems before his flight and never went into space. Slayton worked as astronaut training supervisor for NASA afterwards.

Actually Deke Slayton DID fly in space. He was the Docking Module pilot on the Apollo/Soyuz mission in 1975 along with commander Tom Stafford and CM pilot Vance Brand.
