Harry Truman was the first Cold War president, and as a result, his chief foreign policies all involved the destruction of communism in some way. Most importantly, the Truman Doctrine changed America's foreign policy. It called for intervention against aggressive moves by the Soviet Union on smaller countries. On the domestic front, he took steps to move the economy out of the post war doldrums, but was met with impatient labor actions that pitted him against the labor unions. He attempted to push forward civil rights, and other domestic issues, but these were mostly greeted with apathy. However, he is the president who desegregated the military.

Harry Truman's foreign policy was shaped by the onset of the Cold War. He implemented the containment policy to prevent the spread of communism and supported the creation of NATO. Domestically, Truman focused on domestic reform and economic policies. He introduced the Fair Deal, which aimed to expand social welfare programs and promote civil rights, and pushed for the desegregation of the armed forces.
