Partly due to the lack of any major hopes of bringing the Civil War to a rapid conclusion, it seemed despite even the Battle of Antietam did not sway voters from voting for the Democratic Party. In general, Democrats made substantial gains in Congress and won some important governorships. This had to be encouraging for the South.

Playing politics with top generals such as Burnside and McClellan were not in the Union's best interests.

In June of 1862, General PT Beauregard was replaced by General Braxton Bragg as the new commander of the Army of Mississippi. Bragg then formulated plans for a future invasion into the Border State of Kentucky.
The Confederate Army of the West began with General Earl Van Dorn in command from January to March of 1862, followed by General John P. McCown from March to July, and General Sterling Price commanded from July to September of 1862.
Although Lee's retreat from Antietam were cause for celebration in the North, the Republicans did suffer midterm losses in the election of 1862. Despite that, the Republicans maintained their majorities in the House and Senate.

Major General Irvin McDowell actually had two stints as commander of the Union Army. The first was from March 13, 1862 until April 4, 1862. The second was from June 26, 1862 _ September 5, 1862.

Union Postmaster General Montgomery Blair opposed Lincoln's preliminary emancipation proclamation because he believed it might cause some border states to secede. He also believed that the announcement would help the Democrats in the November 1862 elections.

On June 30, 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee mounts a heavy assault of Confederate forces at Glendale. The results are inconclusive. McClellan was mysteriously absent from the scene. Nevertheless, without a commanding general, Union forces repel lee's latest assault on the retreating Union army.
