It is not precisely known, but the Hebrew word suggests they were bullies of some sort. They were probably also large in build and stature. Some have suggested they were also demon-possessed. Others have suggested they were angels; however, angels are sexless beings so that is improbable.

Likely, the term "giant" is used as a translation for nephilim (which are in Genesis chapter 6) and the word appears again when the spies recount the inhabitants of Canaan and call them nephilim (in Numbers chapter 13).

The most famous of the biblical giants is undoubtedly Goliath. Millions of young children have been taught the famous story of David slaying the Philistine giant, Goliath, to guide them to understand the greatness of David and, perhaps, his God (1 Samuel 17). It is not widely known that there is also a Hebrew tradition that Elhanan slew Goliath (2 Samuel 21:19), a story which the King James Bible has altered by inserting 'the brother of' [in italics to indicate that this was not an exact translation], thus avoiding the original contradiction.
