When I thought of quitting smoking, I was crying. Then I smoked more sticks than usual. My will power worked and I quit smoking. I was happy that day. Then next day, I smoked again. Same thing happened for so many years. One day quitting, another day smoking. Two days quitting, smoking more sticks in following two days. Then after 50 years of smoking, I have not smoked for 5 years now. But I don't know whether I have totally quit smoking. I may smoke any time again.

I remember the joke, "To quit smoking is very easy, I have done it many times."

In Short, the first 3 days are the most difficult.

You have to bare in mind that there are both physiological and psychological factors at play here. The physical withdrawal will peak within the first 3 days, and after 3 days nicotine will not be detectable in the body.

You may have continued withdrawal for approximately 2 weeks, but this will not be anything near what you experienced in the first 3 days.

Important: Do not use smoking cessation products, they just prolong the agony. If your body receives nicotine, you will remain in a state of withdrawal. Your best chance of success is to stop 'cold turkey' and never have another cigarette.

Try to see yourself for what you are during this process - a nicotine addict. Smoking is more acceptable than being an alcoholic, or heroine addict - but there is no real difference. Dont wean yourself off cigarettes - this method does not work for an addiction. If you do the above you should be successful and have the least amount of suffering possible.

Your mind will play tricks on you, trying to get you to have another cigarette, or just a drag - when this happens remind yourself of how your felt when you decided to quit. Acknowledge that you do want to have a cigarette (do not lie to yourself), but realise that if you do have a cigarette you will continue with your addiction. So think of all the cigarettes that would follow having that one, and choose to not take that cigarette. I can almost promise you that if you have that one drag you will go back to where you are now.

Battle out the 3 days - knowing you will be healthier, feel better and find a way to get through it that works for you, without replacing one addiction for another.

Taking vitamins, especially Vitamin C can be very beneficial in helping clear out the toxins/nicotine. Eat fruits and vegetables. The more acidic fruits will help with toxin elimination. Apples and raisins seem to help control cravings.

Get out to no smoking places, do some exercise - see that you have a life without the cigarettes. Feel what its like to be freed.

Good luck!

Cold turkey means to stop smoking with no gradual reduction i.e. you give your system a short sharp shock as smoking stops and nicotine is withdrawn from your system.
