The funny looking characters at the bottom of a check (bank number and account number) are printed in magnetic ink. This is the only use I know for it. Magnetic ink has iron oxide added to it. I'm not sure but I don't think it's magnetized when printed, instead the machine that reads it magnetizes it just before reading it. The advantage of magnetic ink is it can be read even if there is other printing on top of it which would obscure printing read optically.
