The initial aim of the crusades was for the Christians to gain control of Jerusalem over the Muslims. They succeeded in doing so but only held Jerusalem temporarily.
Europeans were introduced to new ideas through the Greek and Latin manuscripts that the crusaders brought back with them. This ultimately led to the Renaissance and the scientific revolution.
The crusaders also bought back spices from the Byzantine empire and people realized how useful they were. This helped to increase trade and led to the revival of a cash economy (before this much trade would have been bartered).
