Many became involved in the creation of colleges for freemen in the south, such as the two Presbyterian ministers who founded Johnson C. Smith University. (It was Biddle University then.)

They also became involved in the anti-Mason and anti-spiritualist movements.

During and after the US Civil War, evangelical Christians had a vocal voice in public policies. With that said, they attempted at various times during and after the US Civil War to impose a Christian amendment to the US Constitution and supported legislation aimed against Catholic influence in public schools. Neither of these efforts ever had much traction. Unsuccessful on public policy, they changed their focus to personal behavior and started many crusades against alcohol.

How can Christians feel right by voting for Barack Obama when he supports same-sex marriage and it's a sin?

First, it should be noted that not all Christians share the view of the questioner that gay marriage is a sin. There are certainly conservative and Evangelical Christians who feel this way, but moderate and liberal Christians disagree. The argument over who is a "real" Christian has played out in politics, especially on the Republican side, with many members of that party leaning very conservative about social issues. But more important is this fact: American is not a theocracy, and it is not the president's job to enforce Christian morality. Even if Mr. Obama did believe that gay marriage is a sin (and he had some doubts about it for years, only finally agreeing with it in 2012, after much thought), he is not the Pastor in Chief. He is the president, and he has every right to believe that gay people should have equal civil rights. We have both civil and religious marriage in America. No church is forced to have gay ceremonies if that denomination doesn't believe in it; but many people today do agree that gay citizens deserve the same right to civil marriage as anyone else. On a personal note, while I would never tell anyone how to vote, I do hope that you will evaluate the president on a number of issues, rather than deciding you cannot vote for him because you disagree with his support for marriage equality.
