Germany was recovering from World War II and was now at the center of the Cold War. The proximity of the Soviet sphere to West Germany and the occupation of East Germany cast a cold pallor on much of the German populace. However, Germany was able to begin forging a new alliance with France which served to rekindle the possibility of German strength and stability.
