Some key events in Germany in the 1960s were the Spiegel Affair and the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials. Other events included the student protests, the ousting of Adenauer, the arrival of guest workers from Turkey, the introduction of emergency acts, and the rise of the Green Party in West Germany, as well as the building of the Berlin Wall, the Reconciliation of the Bishops, and the Ostpolitik of Willi Brandt.
Germany was recovering from World War II and was now at the center of the Cold War. The proximity of the Soviet sphere to West Germany and the occupation of East Germany cast a cold pallor on much of the German populace. However, Germany was able to begin forging a new alliance with France which served to rekindle the possibility of German strength and stability.
