It was terrible. Depending what castle your talking about, though, in the Norman Castles, the Castle was made out of wood, thanks to this, the enemy could easily burn it, or, the wood rotted and it would smell very horrible. They made wood instead of bricks because there was alot of wood, and it was much faster to make the castle be made of wood rather then bricks. Although they did fix this some day by making the castle out of cement and bricks. But, the Castle had actually had some rooms to go to. It had a Church where people could pray to their Lord. They also had a kitchen, where they made the food, they had a hall, and a very big table to eat what people made in the kitchen. Just to let you know when you are about to ask another question about a castle.
Castles were often built with defense in mind--so they were of stone, often on a hill. In addition, central narrow staircases were common. Generally, they weren't very comfortable in cold weather, being drafty and not insulated. If there was wealth, then they hung rugs and tapestry on the walls to reduce the draft of cold air.
