They were rough and spartan but not bad. The only theory that the living conditions would affect is the Ergot poisoning theory. The afflicted would have ingested the Ergot fungus along with the wheat or rye from the previous harvest after a long enough time for the fungus to really grow. If the ergot really is the culprit and the living conditions allotted for better storage or fresher food, the witch panic may not have happened.

It depends on which theory of affliction is being discussed. Conditions don't factor into some of them. Ones that do include:

Ergotism: The damp fall had allowed Ergot fungus to spread on the wheat and rye widely eaten during the New England. Ergotism can cause hallucinations and isolated stiffening of the limbs ( ie. your elbow could lock up but the rest of your arm is fine).

Living Conditions would only affect the Trials under one theory: the theory of Ergot Poisoning from Wheat or rye. Had there been better conditions for food storage or access to fresher food, the fungus would not have been ingested and the afflictions would not have occurred.
