Mostly they were covered in leather hides soaked in vinegar to protect it from fire. But metal plating was also used on occasion.
Siege towers were typically protected with a combination of timber, metal, and sometimes animal hide. The outer shell of the tower was made of thick wooden planks to provide structural integrity and protection. Metal plates were often added to reinforce vulnerable areas like the front and sides. Additionally, animal hide was sometimes used as an extra layer of protection against projectiles like flaming arrows.

A siege tower is a temporary wooden tower on wheels used to help the besiegers get over the walls of the castle or town. It was pushed towards the walls until a ramp could be lowered, allowing direct access to the top of the wall, effectively negating the benefits the wall offered the defenders.

used as a replacement for ladders to send troops on walls (more people could get in it then on a ladder and are less exposed) the effect was a lot of people coming to kill you lol
most siege machines are made from wood
