The 19th century European imperialism was mainly caused by the desperate need of nations to secure their acquired territories and colonies. Also, they needed to strengthen their military forces to defend against possible invasion.

Usualy such policies exist in countries where there is a diety or soveirgn figure, and some examples are the military imperialism of Japan in the 1930's and 40's, during which time the Japanese military invaded many nearby islands, and large swaths of mainland China in an attempt to create a vast Pacific empire.
