The National Convention was the governing body of France from the start of the revolution until the formation of the National Directory. They were originally made up of moderates, leftists, and rightists but that changed when Robespierre came into power. He led the reign of terror which removed most of the moderates and leftists from power and ended their lives. Following Robespierre's execution the Jacobins gained control of the National Convention and it became known as the Thermidorian Convention. It ruled very unwisely and is responsible for the great financial ruin that will later befall France during the reign of Napoleon. In 1794 they were replaced by the five man Directory, the Council of Ancients, and the Council of Five Hundred.
Many of the delegates at the Philadelphia Convention argued for a stronger national government, as one of the weakness of the Articles of Confederation was that it created a weak national government. The Constitutional Convention was held in 1787.

The national convention is one of the most important responsibilities of the national committee. Held once every four years, the national convention is where party members nominate their candidates for president and vice president of the United States. In addition, the Party's National Platform is voted on and adopted at the Convention. The platform is supposed to reflect the values and priorities of the Party and Americans in general; and serves as a guide for the party's Presidential candidate as well as its candidates at every level of the ticket.
Symbolized by the guillotine, the Terror was a period of the French Revolution when radical Jacobins seized control of the National Convention and launched a widespread campaign of executions. No part of society was spared from the deaths brought on by political motivation, greed, or dissent. Ultimately, the Terror remains a focal point in the history of the Revolution and conjures up the most startling images of the time of social upheaval.
Primaries or Primary. Delegates to the national convention are allocated (chosen) on the basis of percentage of votes candidates win in the presidential primary. This system has been used in most of the states.
