  • Like all wars in this Civilized world; MONEY!
  • The South, was an agrecultural society; the North industreal
  • As part of the United States; the South a market for industrial products, which the North considered to be, their market.
  • France and England were also industrialized, and could have been a supplier for the South, especially if the South withdrew from the Union.
  • Had it not been for a speech by Lincoln; naming the war as, "The War To Free Slaves"! Both England, and France would have entered the war on the side of the South, which would have made it a very different war.
  • Slave trading was starting to get a bad name; thus European countries hesitated to join a war, against those who claimed to be; Freeing Slaves.
  • The crown of England and the French government, supported privateers; as La Fayette, and Francis Drake, to supply, and support the South, but that was as far as they dared go!
  • The North had no true interest in freeing slaves, and Lincoln knew that, he owned slaves himself.
  • Lincoln's ruse worked!

Many Northerners, not all however, fought to keep the nation united. The slavery issue did not necessarily cause young men to fight the war. Slavery was an issue before the war, and Lincon's goal was to solve that problem after the war.
