Ironically for a now Muslim-only city, Jews were prominent among its founders and oldest inhabitants and they remained a powerful presence in the city until well after the foundation of Islam (they by the way also instituted the habit of walking around the temple and the Ka'aba stone in Mecca as a form of veneration). Madina was one of the most important cities of the pre-Muslim Yemenite Kingdom.

Before the arrival of Islam, Medina was divided into various tribes and clans that often engaged in conflicts and disputes. There was no centralized authority or governing system, leading to a lack of stability and security in the region. This decentralized political structure contributed to social and political unrest among the inhabitants of Medina.
