Depended on the wealth of the family. One reason people built such large houses is that the plantations were several miles apart from other people and/or cities so houses had many rooms to accommodate guests. Often good friends would stay over for several days or weeks. They would have parties, dances, and dress balls. Gambling was very popular, so were card games, and horse races. The holidays brought parties and so did other events like weddings and births. Places like New Orleans were very busy and had a lot of things going on like concert and plays. Riverboats used the rivers and some had plays and concerts on them as well as Poker.
