The disadvantages: Banning liquor failed to end drinking, and instead created a booming criminal subculture in which enterprising outlaws were able to make millions by selling illegal liquor. It also made criminals of ordinary, harmless human beings.

The advantages: Prohibition managed to reduce drinking in America by about 30%. And the temperance movement that started a half century before helped educate people about some of the dangers of excessive drinking.

the 18th Amendment made the manufacture, sale and transportation of intoxicating liquor illegal. It was made law in 1919. In effect this caused the underground world or brewing and selling alcohol to rise and become popular. Speakeasy's became very popular and which gave birth to the big mob bosses such as Al Capone.

In 1933 the amendment was repealed, allowing the manufacture, sale and transportation of intoxication liquor to continue.

In a documentary on the History channel. One professor even speculated that the prohibition brought about the muscle cars we know today, as bootleggers needed a car with a bigger engine in order to outrun the police.
